{"id":16912,"date":"2024-11-28T17:42:14","date_gmt":"2024-11-28T17:42:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/?p=16912"},"modified":"2024-11-28T17:42:14","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T17:42:14","slug":"wrexham-school-pupils-win-tour-of-ao-recycling-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/wrexham-school-pupils-win-tour-of-ao-recycling-plant\/","title":{"rendered":"Wrexham school pupils win tour of AO recycling plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A secondary school in North Wales won a \u2018money can\u2019t buy\u2019 trip to one of the biggest fridge recycling plants in Europe, hosted by a children\u2019s TV presenter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AO, the UK\u2019s most trusted electrical retailer, ran a competition to give one lucky class the chance to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the state-of-the-art facility, in Telford, led by CBBC host and sustainability influencer James Stewart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ysgol Bryn Alyn, in Wrexham, won the prize and took a group of 15 pupils, aged between 11 and 13.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as meeting AO\u2019s huge fridge crushing machine Bertha, which weighs 80 tonnes and can \u2018eat\u2019 up to 100 fridges per hour, the class were also shown science experiments with Lego and learned about how AO processes around 200 tonnes of fridge plastic each week, which goes on to make new products such as bathroom and kitchen fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the trip, James Stewart challenged the children to \u2018be a TV presenter for the day\u2019 by filming their visit, on smart phones provided by AO, and editing the footage into short videos, which have since been shared on AO\u2019s social media channels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Holden, science teacher at Ysgol Bryn Alyn, said: \u201cI can\u2019t thank AO enough for choosing our school to win their competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was a really insightful day and James Stewart was great with the kids, giving them the confidence to be mini TV presenters and letting them shine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Stewart added: \u201cI was absolutely blown away when I first visited AO\u2019s fridge recycling plant so it\u2019s been brilliant to experience it through the eyes of children this time around. I think a few of them have bright futures as TV presenters and sustainability influencers!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rob Sant, AO\u2019s group recycling director, came up with the idea for the competition after learning that more than a third of Brits rely on their kids to remind them to recycle.
