{"id":13911,"date":"2021-05-14T08:48:42","date_gmt":"2021-05-14T07:48:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/?p=13911"},"modified":"2021-05-14T08:48:42","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T07:48:42","slug":"liverpool-school-selected-for-ofsted-pilot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/liverpool-school-selected-for-ofsted-pilot\/","title":{"rendered":"Liverpool school selected for Ofsted pilot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">A specialist school in Woolton has taken part in a pilot for\u00a0Ofsted which helps\u00a0inspectors learn about the new inspection framework that will be used from September 2021.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13912\" src=\"https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mrs-Ania-Hildrey-centre-with-Abbots-Lea-School-students-photo-taken-pre-COVID-19-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mrs-Ania-Hildrey-centre-with-Abbots-Lea-School-students-photo-taken-pre-COVID-19-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mrs-Ania-Hildrey-centre-with-Abbots-Lea-School-students-photo-taken-pre-COVID-19-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mrs-Ania-Hildrey-centre-with-Abbots-Lea-School-students-photo-taken-pre-COVID-19-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mrs-Ania-Hildrey-centre-with-Abbots-Lea-School-students-photo-taken-pre-COVID-19-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mrs-Ania-Hildrey-centre-with-Abbots-Lea-School-students-photo-taken-pre-COVID-19-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/education-today.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mrs-Ania-Hildrey-centre-with-Abbots-Lea-School-students-photo-taken-pre-COVID-19.jpg 1620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Abbot\u2019s Lea School\u00a0saw this as an exceptional opportunity to help Ofsted shape its inspection of special schools and also to use it to learn about the process ahead of its own planned inspection which is now overdue, and expected\u00a0to take place\u00a0any time, and no later than next school year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The experience\u00a0was helpful and positive, and resulted in a number of findings, all of which support the school\u2019s self-evaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Four Ofsted Her Majesty\u2019s Inspectors (HMIs), including senior HMIs,\u00a0praised the school for its clearly presented and well-triangulated strengths. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The school leaders received helpful feedback about the suggested focus for the next steps in the school\u2019s development journey towards becoming an international centre of Autism education, research and professional development, and all of the pointers will feed into the School Development Plan 2021-24 which the school is currently consulting on with the students, staff and the families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Ofsted benefited too; the experience of practising the new inspection approaches in a special school setting proved particularly helpful for the team and many of the suggestions made by the Abbot\u2019s Lea School leaders will contribute to the revising of the protocols for the actual visits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Headteacher,\u00a0Mrs Ania\u00a0Hildrey\u00a0said: \u201cAs a school leader, I want what is best for my students. This is neither governed, directed or limited by Ofsted inspection framework, handbook or the actual inspection visit process. Ofsted is therefore neither a matrix of what we must do as a school, nor the main indicator of whether we are superb at what we help our students achieve.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0Ofsted can, however, be a very helpful additional moderator of a school\u2019s effectiveness and so, with that in mind, I always welcome another view and perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201cOur engagement in the pilot provided a brilliant opportunity to pause \u2013 after a very turbulent time of the pandemic operation \u2013 and invite an external view of whether the ambition we have for our students, and the ways in which we support them, is solid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Mrs Hildrey added: \u201cI am delighted with the appraisal received and it re-affirmed our own evidence that the school is outstanding, particularly in the most complex area of positive behaviour support, personal development and raising aspirations for adulthood and independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201cAs ever, the more you look, the more you find and it was equally helpful to have four pairs of \u201cfresh\u201d eyes, with no prior knowledge of our school, give us feedback on what we could do better.
